The motor is the “Factory racing version” of a stock Grey Marine 150 hp twin carburetor Fireball. Another feature is the non-trip chine which is taken from there racing hulls. An interesting construction feature for this Ventnor in 1948 was a bottom of 5-ply Weldwood inner plywood with 9/16 Mahogany outer planking. The boat is restored to all original “as built” factory specifications right down to the motor clamps, tacked upholstery, wiring, etc. Every individual plank had to be measured at every frame station to make sure from port to starboard, to the centerline of the hull was the same for every plank, or the last two planks at the front of the motor hatches wouldn’t be the same (They are within 1/32”). The new covering boards are compound curved, stack laminated, nailed cove and bead mahogany like a canoe with the last piece having a rabbet that accepts the decking. As you can see there is no perimeter seam where the decking meets the covering boards also as originally constructed. The new deck planks are compound curved, tongue & grooved Honduras mahogany that is “blind nailed” as it was originally constructed. The project was postponed, and restoration started in January 2011. The boat was a total wreck with the decks of the boat being crushed, bottom and sides were fiberglass up to the top decks, bottom was rotten, transom rotten, and a couple holes in the sides. Fins on cars didn’t become popular until 10 years later and even when Chris Craft came out with the Cobra it wasn’t as well received as the designers thought.Īfter personally completing a frame-off restoration of a rare 1940 Pontiac Woody Wagon in 2003 for myself, and looking for another challenging project to work on in the evening and weekends, I came across this equally rare 1948 19’ Ventnor Sport Runabout with only six other of these particular models left in existence. When the “finned” runabout was unveiled it did draw a lot of attention, but had a high price tag ($3,990) due to the complexity of the design and of course the labor to execute the design on the factory floor. At this time Ventnor’s reputation for building the worlds fastest speed boats carried a lot of weight. Following the war Ventnor entered the pleasure boat market with single engine runabouts and twin engine cruisers. Since 1902 Ventnor has been known as “the builders of the worlds fastest speed boats” with such recognized Gold Cup winners as “My Sin”, “Hotsy Totsy”, “Tempo”, and “Tempo IV”ĭuring war time Ventnor built large aircraft rescue boats and submarine chasers.
